English gentry food c. 1660, Vermicella was made at home or could be purchased in the international ports. "A composition of flour, cheese, yolks of eggs, sugar, and saffron, reduced to a paste, and formed into long slender pieces like worms, by forciing it with a piston through a number of little holes." (Samuel Johnson) It is not served as a pasta dish, but used in puddings and soups.
